Rancho Palos Verdes, on the Peninsula's southwest side, was incorporated in 1973 and is the newest and largest city . Close to 41,000 residents live in single family and multiple family dwellings in a little more than 13.6 square miles. The 7.5 square miles of unspoiled coastline feature striking topography with quiet coves and beaches protected by steep cliffs. One of the most exciting places to observe natural marine life is the rocky coves and beaches of Portuguese Bend. Jutting out into the Pacific Ocean and away from the heavy industrialized smog belt, the Palos Verdes Peninsula is a charmed place to live.

The Palos Verdes Peninsula Unified School District serves the four Peninsula cities and has a population of approximately 9200 students. Students attend eight 5-K elementary schools, one K-5 parent participation school, two 6-8 intermediate school, one high school one continuation high school, and an adult education program. The district initiated a before and after school child-care program in the fall of 1996 at each elementary school site.
For nearly twenty years, the district has made adjustments in facilities, staff and program in response to declining enrollment: however, the past five years have seen a more stabilized enrollment, with some modest growth in the last two years. In the 1996-97 school year, the district responded to the state mandate to reduce class size to 20 to I in grades one and two at all elementary sites. Throughout the changes over recent years, the quality of the educational program has been maintained. Daily student attendance is well above 95%, and the dropout rate is below 1%. Students perform at the 97th to 99th percentiles in state and national testing.
Over 90% of the high school graduates pursue higher education. Students, staff and schools consistently receive recognition and awards in all curricular areas. Community volunteers make significant contributions to the public schools. The Peninsula Education Foundation has been successful in raising local funds to meet classroom needs. Strong PTA programs support and enrich schools delivery systems.
